Complexity Management
Making sense of Intractable Problems for organizational performance

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.“ - Albert Einstein

We are approaching the end of second generation Knowledge Management (KM) with its focus on tacit-explicit knowledge conversion and codification, providing a limited but useful practice. The Cynefin Framework builds on pioneering work in KM, integrating it with third generation KM, and applies new strategies, tools, and practices for sense-making in complex business environments. At the heart of the Cynefin framework is a distinction between ordered and un-ordered systems, and the recognition that systems with different qualities require differentiated methods for both diagnosis and intervention. The Cynefin Framework has been recognized as one of the first practical applications of Complexity Theory to Management Science.

Cynefin Complexity Management research and consulting experience indicates that best practices, process reengineering, TQM and Scenario Planning are effective within the boundaries of ordered surroundings. However, in environments that involve large complex or chaotic networks of individuals, with multiple agendas and interactions neither prediction nor control is possible. Social Complexity Management provides a practiced based consulting methodology that produces multiple perspectives on intractable challenges. This enables successful “complexity management” interventions to be applied in such areas as:

  • Strategy Formulation and Implementation
  • Marketing and Communications Strategy
  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • New Product and Value Proposition Development
  • Change Management Practices
  • Customer Feedback and Assessment
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation
  • Collaboration Sustainability Practices
  • Competitive Intelligence
  • Designing Enterprise Architecture
  • Workforce Transition and Workforce Effectiveness
  • Knowledge and Ecosystem Mapping
  • Innovation Sustainability Practices

Using Cynefin and Helix consulting strategies, methods and tools embedded in sense making, narrative techniques and networks combined with deep industry experience we help our clients achieve their strategic and operating goals to compete effectively in complex business environments.

Helix’s practiced based global network of world-class expertise provides our clients access to a level of understanding that delivers unprecedented professional services in all areas of Complexity Management.
